Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan is encouraging Benalla residents to shop local.
Her comments come as the North East Small Business Festival kicks off in the region offering a range of events, workshops and opportunities for small business owners.
Ms Ryan said Benalla had over 600 outstanding and diverse businesses and it was important that locals made the most of the opportunity to buy in town, rather than online or elsewhere.
“Benalla has a thriving hub of small businesses,” Ms Ryan said.
“From floristry, clothing and hair and beauty, to real estate, hardware and trades there is certainly every opportunity for people to buy from local businesses first.
“Shopping and eating in Benalla ensures money stays in our local economy and has flow on benefits for other businesses."
Benalla Business Network chair Louise Armstrong said small businesses were the largest employers nationally and it was important to support them by buying local whenever possible.
“Our local businesses, big and small, are an integral part of our towns providing employment, sponsorship and support of so many community and sporting groups and keeping money circulating in our towns,” Mrs Armstrong said.
“They can often provide better service and support, and recognise and reward the loyalty of their customers with simple but critical things like free advice, free delivery, face-to-face communication, added extras and just generally going the extra mile because they know you and are invested in the wellbeing of their own community.
“I want to be able to buy what I need in my own town, or very close by, because it makes it easy for me and the added bonus is that I know that my money contributes to more jobs in my town or region as the money keeps circulating.
“If something goes wrong, I can sort it out quickly with a real person. Successful local businesses can afford to help my child's school or sporting club.
“They can support community events and back up the efforts of volunteer groups who give so much to our towns.”
Ms Ryan will be launching the Survive and Thrive Small Business Conference at the North Eastern Hotel, Benalla as part of the North East Small Business Festival on Tuesday 2 August.
