Andrews’ Government blocks extra funding for regional roads
20 September 2018
Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals, Steph Ryan has criticised a move by the Greens and Labor to block millions of dollars in extra funding for country roads.
The Nationals and Liberals proposed amendments during debate of The Transport Legislation Amendment Bill 2018 in Parliament that would see more funding put into maintaining roads in regional Victoria.
These amendments would have ensured that 40 per cent of revenue collected from speeding fines and traffic camera offences went directly to regional and rural road maintenance, with a further 40 per cent to maintain roads in outer suburban interface areas.
“The Andrews Labor Government has continued to ignore the pleas of country Victorians by choosing to block an increase to road maintenance funding,” Ms Ryan said.
“Roads in country Victoria are getting worse and worse, including those across the Euroa electorate.
“This is another huge loss for the electorate under Daniel Andrews’ city centric government.
“Since their election in 2014, Labor have continued to cut funding to country road and as a result regional Victorians have suffered.
“Instead, they have spent billions on metro projects in Melbourne and left our roads in appalling conditions.
“Only The Nationals in government will provide a better deal for roads in regional Victoria, including the re-introducing the $160 million Country Roads and Bridges Program that Labor cut the minute they got into government.”
