Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan has called on the Andrews Government to halt the sale of the former railway site on Sutherland Street in Kilmore.
Ms Ryan met with local residents at the site this week to discuss options for its development.
“Last year, the Coalition Government was in discussions with Mitchell Shire to see whether this site could be used for a community purpose,” Ms Ryan said.
“Despite there being great community interest in the potential of the site, VicTrack has listed the land for public sale.”
Ms Ryan said she wrote to Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan to suggest the government offer a lease to Mitchell Shire until council could purchase the land.
“The land is one of the options currently being investigated for a multipurpose community centre with indoor sports courts and a stage for performances or large functions,” Ms Ryan said.
“The previous Coalition Government partnered with the Kilmore community to fund a feasibility study into the multipurpose centre.
“The study will be finalised within weeks and I understand that one of the two sites identified as being most suitable is the Sutherland St block.”
“Even if the site is not used for this purpose, it still has great potential for other uses, given its proximity to local schools including St Patricks Primary School, Kilmore Primary School and Assumption College.”
Ms Ryan said that it didn’t make sense for the government to sell the site while one of its department’s was weighing the site’s potential for a community centre.
“I urge the Andrews Government to halt the sale of the land and to facilitate a lease to allow the land to be used for a purpose which benefits Kilmore.”
