Benalla job losses devastating for local workers

Workers at the Benalla concrete precast facility yesterday received notice that 60 people will be laid off.
Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan said the news was devastating for local workers, particularly on the back of news this week of Target’s closure.
“This is a triple whammy for Benalla when we have just received the news of Target's closure and businesses are struggling with the coronavirus lockdowns,” Ms Ryan said.
“LS Precast is the meat in the sandwich here between the Andrews Government and the builders of the West Gate Tunnel.
“The government has cruelled the project by rushing in before it resolved where to safely store contaminated soil.
“Labor desperately sought to paint the concerns we raised about the government’s lack of process on the project as blocking local jobs when in truth, we were urging the government to do its due diligence.
“The tunnel is a $6.7 billion project that did not even go to tender.
“The government MPs who were quick to claim the credit for creating the jobs must now guarantee that these workers will get their jobs back,” Ms Ryan said.
