Benalla sporting clubs receive grants

28 May 2015

Five of Benalla’s sporting clubs will benefit from funding as part of the second round of VicHealth’s Active Club Grants program, Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan said today.

Ms Ryan said Benalla Golf Club, Benalla Rovers Soccer Club, Benalla Little Athletics, Benalla Hockey Association and the Benalla Triathlon Club would all benefit from the grants.

“VicHealth’s Active Club Grants are aimed at increasing physical activity within communities by making it easier for clubs to reach out to new participants,” Ms Ryan said.

“Sporting clubs often face expenses that are necessary but not always justifiable through tight budgets and these grants will assist them in purchasing items or equipment to help improve safety.

“All of these clubs are supported by hardworking volunteers who give their own time to ensure they can continue to operate.

“While small, the grants can make a big difference by reducing the pressure to raise funds from club members and supporters.

“Benalla Hockey Club will now be able to purchase new hockey sticks and protective masks, Benalla Triathlon Club new road safety sign holders and Benalla Golf Club new clubs, practice balls and training pads.

“In addition, Benalla Little Athletics can now purchase a portable timing device and Benalla Rovers Soccer Club new match balls and bibs.

Ms Ryan said half of all adults in Victoria do not get enough exercise and encouraging participation in a sporting club was one way to combat this.

“As well as the physical benefits, research shows that sport builds community pride and loyalty and offers people the chance to get involved, providing them with a positive sense of self-worth,” Ms Ryan said.

“It is fantastic that these clubs have been recognised for the role they play within the community and I am delighted to welcome this funding.”

The following clubs were among a total of 296 across Victoria to share in more than $694,000 worth of VicHealth Active Club Grants:

  • Benalla Golf Club: $2,688
  • Benalla Rovers Soccer Club: $2,535
  • Benalla Little Athletics Centre: $1,350
  • Benalla Hockey Association: $1,226
  • Benalla Triathlon Club Inc: $1,000
