Berry St helps people make cents of money matters
16 January 2019
Euroa MP Steph Ryan is encouraging Benalla residents who want to improve their understanding of money matters to sign up for Berry Street’s SaverPlus program.
Over 200 people have participated in the program since it was first rolled out in the Benalla area 7 years ago.
Ms Ryan, who is also the Victorian Nationals’ deputy leader, recently met with Wendy McNamara who runs the program from Berry Street’s Benalla office to learn more about the SaverPlus program.
“Skyrocketing bills are putting many people under pressure. This program gives people a great opportunity to learn the skills they need to get control of their finances,” Ms Ryan said.
“It builds financial knowledge and skills in areas such as budgeting, setting goals, dealing with debt and planning for the future.
“Not everyone learns these skills as a young person, but they can make a world of difference. As the old saying goes, knowledge is power.”
Ms Ryan said after signing up, participants needed to commit to depositing a minimum of $12.50 per week into an account over a 10 month period.
“Over the course of four workshops, participants learn how to plan and budget, examine their saving and spending habits, learn about how banking and superannuation work and put in place a plan for the future,” Ms Ryan said.
“Once their savings goal is reached, ANZ will match the savings dollar-for-dollar, up to $500, to help pay for education costs such as computers, uniforms, books and sports equipment.”
To be eligible for the program, residents need to be 18 years old, have a current healthcare or pension card, are in receipt of an eligible Commonwealth Social Security benefit, allowance or payment and have a small income. They also need to be in education or have a child who is in kinder, school or university.
SaverPlus was first established by the ANZ in partnership with Brotherhood of St Lawrence and is backed by the Victorian Government.
To find out if you are eligible for the SaverPlus program phone Wendy on 5822 8100 or visit Berry Street’s Benalla office at 85 Nunn St, Benalla.
