Comments attributable to the Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan:
“Labor’s failure to provide funding for the Waranga Hospital in its package for Goulburn Valley Health is a huge blow to the Rushworth community.
“The Health Minister is yet to acknowledge or respond to a number of invitations to visit the hospital from both myself and the community.
“Today’s blatant disregard of Rushworth only throws salt in this wound.
“Many people have horror stories about Goulburn Valley Health, my family included. That's why The Nationals promised to rebuild the hospital almost 18 months ago.
"Today's announcement goes part way to redressing the imbalance in Labor's first budget where just 1.7 per cent of capital health funding was spent in regional Victoria."
The Rushworth campus of Goulburn Valley Health is more than 50 years old and in very poor condition, requiring high levels of ongoing maintenance at significant cost.
The remote location of the building is also cause for concern with the nearby Whroo Forest increasing threat of fire.
The previous Coalition government committed the $7 million required for the upgrade and co-location of the hospital and aged care facility at Rushworth but this did not eventuate under the current government.
Health Minister Jill Hennessy is well aware of the need for funding at the Rushworth but has refused to visit. The community has been actively campaigning to have her visit the campus.
