Community campaign for bus services in Heathcote pays off
12 June 2018
A long fight for improved bus services between Heathcote and Bendigo finally paid off today with services set to run seven days a week.
Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan has been advocating for the improvement since she was elected, highlighting the need for extra services in Parliament and lobbying the government for action.
“I am delighted that our campaign for increased services has paid off. The wheels turned very slowly for a number of years, but after bringing some pressure to bear on the government we finally have a commitment to additional services.
“A lot of credit is due to people like Dan Douglas who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make it happen.”
Ms Ryan said better public transport connections are so important to improving Heathcote residents’ access to services.
“This will give the community greater access to Bendigo’s health services, education and employment opportunities.
“Services will be increased to five return buses every weekday, as well as the introduction of three weekend buses.”
Ms Ryan said she was also pleased bus fees were set to be reduced.
“Households are under great pressure from increased living costs,” Ms Ryan said.
“Daniel Andrews has increased taxes, gas, electricity prices and taxi fares, making the need for affordable and reliable public transport more pressing. Every cent back into people’s pockets is important.”
