Daniel Andrews’ decision to back demands from the United Firefighters Union (UFU) has been described as a kick in the guts to Victoria’s dedicated CFA volunteers by Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan.
CFA members from across the Euroa electorate joined thousands of volunteers from around the state in Melbourne yesterday to protest Daniel Andrews' plan to sell out the CFA.
Ms Ryan said she had also written to the Premier asking him to meet with local volunteers but he had declined to do so, showing a complete disregard for Australia’s largest volunteer organisation.
“The Premier’s support of the UFU’s bid to take over the Country Fire Authority (CFA) confirms Daniel Andrews puts the demands of his union mates before the needs of 60,000 selfless volunteers and our rural communities,” Ms Ryan said.
“The UFU’s demands include the ability to veto CFA management decisions, handing control of the organisation to the union.”
Ms Ryan said on Thursday night she attended a meeting of representatives of District 23's volunteer firefighters in Benalla.
"Daniel Andrews should not underestimate how angry our local volunteers are,” Ms Ryan said.
"No one is against a pay rise for paid staff but volunteers simply will not accept Daniel Andrews' plan to hand control of the CFA to the union.
“The important work of the CFA and its thousands of volunteers must not be compromised by this city-centric Labor Government.”
