Easing the cost of living squeeze

25 October 2018

A Liberal Nationals Government will cut household water bills by up to $100 a year.

Daniel Andrews and Labor have lost control of cost of living pressures.

In the four years of the Andrews Labor Government utilities costs like electricity, gas and water have sky-rocketed.

Add to that the 12 new or extra taxes that Daniel Andrews has introduced and it’s no wonder most Victorians feel they’re losing control of their personal finances.

That’s why a Liberal Nationals Government will introduce a Fairer Water Bills plan that will deliver household savings of up to $100 a year.

Under this plan, water authorities will be required to identify business cost savings that can be passed back to customers as reductions on household bills.

The last time the Fairer Water Bills plan operated, more than $1 billion in savings was found and returned to customers in the form of annual water bill rebates.

Similar to the original program, a suitably qualified individual will be appointed to work with Victoria’s Water Corporations to identify savings in areas including financial management, management of assets, procurement practices, shared services and software standardisation, metering modernisation and project management.

It is expected that savings will be identified between December 2018 and June 2019 with customers starting to receive rebates on their bills from the 2019-20 financial year. It is also anticipated that in addition to financial savings, customers could benefit from more flexible billing cycles and payment structures, more accurate metering and utilisation of water use data.

Comments attributable to Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy:

“My government will ease the cost of living squeeze.

We will help families with free school books at public schools, we will find savings for water costs without Labor’s new taxes to hurt family budgets.

Daniel Andrews and Labor have lost control of costs of living, a Liberal Nationals Government will help Victorians get back in control.”

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Water, Steph Ryan:

“Daniel Andrews has lost control of cost of living pressures like water bills and only a Liberal Nationals Government will deliver fairer bills.

Add to that the 12 new or extra taxes that Daniel Andrews has introduced and it’s no wonder most Victorians feel they’re losing control of their personal finances.

The last time a Liberal Nationals Government worked with Water Corporations we found more than $1 billion in savings that went directly back to the customers.

Savings of up to $100 a household will make a small but important difference to families and older Victorians.”
