Full steam ahead for Benalla track realignment

Benalla residents are one step closer to making their preferred station precinct design a reality, with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) supporting a track relocation.
Last week, the ARTC announced it has backed a modification of the Benalla Station precinct through the Inland Rail project, in line with the necessary safety and technical requirements.
Local MP and deputy Nationals leader Steph Ryan welcomed the ARTC’s announcement, saying it was a huge victory for the local community who had campaigned for two years for the best design for the town.
“This is a significant milestone for Benalla residents who have fought tooth and nail to get this design option on the table,” Ms Ryan said.
“Following overwhelming community support, today the ARTC has announced they will support a modification to realign a portion of track, in line with necessary safety and technical requirements.
“This is a huge win for the Benalla community, including local lobby groups who have spent more than two years opposing plans for a new overpass.
“When the ARTC first released its plans for the Benalla leg of the Inland Rail project, realigning the track wasn’t even on the cards. But through the fierce advocacy of the community, it is now their preferred option.”
Ms Ryan said while the ARTC’s announcement marked a significant milestone in the local campaign, the fight wasn’t over yet.
“There is a real opportunity with this design to fix some of the station’s long-term issues and transform the precinct into something the community can be proud of,” Ms Ryan said.
“The Andrews Government has the power to facilitate participation of the Office of the Victorian Government Architect to work with the ARTC in the design process.
“Last week, I called on the Minister for Public Transport to answer a series of questions regarding the Victorian Government’s involvement moving forward with this very important project.
“The Federal Government have finished the track and the ARTC have elected their preferred design. It is now time for the Andrews Government to meet Benalla residents at the table.”
