Grants awarded for National Youth Week initiatives

19 March 2015

Community organisations, local councils and schools from the Euroa electorate and across Victoria have been awarded grants to hold events and activities as part of National Youth Week 2015, Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan said today.

Ms Ryan said three projects from the Euroa electorate had received $2,000 each for initiatives including FCJ College Benalla, Mitchell Shire Council and Strathbogie Shire Council.

“National Youth Week is a celebration of young people and the important role they play within our communities,” Ms Ryan said.

“It is a joint initiative of the Australian, state and local governments and gives young people the opportunity to express ideas and views and act on issues affecting their lives.

“The theme this year is ‘It Starts With Us’ and it is exciting to see the various projects that have been funded from across Victoria.”

Ms Ryan said she looked forward to being involved in the creative initiatives the Euroa electorate had in store including FCJ College Benalla’s “The Voice of the Future” performing arts night, Strathbogie Shire’s Fast Track Talent Showcase and Mitchell Shire’s Silent Disco ‘Music Mayhem’.

“More than 20,000 young people across Victoria are expected to participate in events during National Youth Week this year including youth summits and awards, short film festivals, music events, dance workshops and competitions,” Ms Ryan said.

“Youth Week is an opportunity for young people to speak up about what is important to them and it is a time for communities to listen.”

Ms Ryan said Shepparton’s Word and Mouth had also received $2,000 for their Project SHINE Youth Massive at the Eastbank Centre.

“I visited Word and Mouth recently to hear about the wonderful work they are doing in the Shepparton community and was impressed with their fantastic efforts.

“It is pleasing to see projects run by youth, for youth and the vision the organisation has to be the voice for young people in Greater Shepparton is inspiring,” Ms Ryan said.

National Youth Week will take places between 10 and 19 April.  For more information please visit www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/nyw.
