Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan is concerned that an increasing number of Benalla’s most vulnerable people are being forced onto public housing wait lists.
The latest figures show that in March this year, 517 people were on the social housing applicants’ register for the Ovens Murray area which includes Benalla.
“Having a roof over one’s head and a secure place to live is something many of us take for granted but it’s a basic right too many people in our community aren’t being afforded,” Ms Ryan said.
“Locally, the number of people waiting for a home has blown out by 38 per cent since December 2014 when Labor came to government.
“In the past six months alone, the public housing waiting list in our region has increased by more than 11 per cent, with more than 500 people now waiting for a home.
“Of this number 125 are classified as ‘priority’ applicants which includes those fleeing family violence, suffering from mental health issues or at risk of homelessness.”
“Under Daniel Andrews, the most vulnerable people in our community are being left behind.”
Ms Ryan said public housing waiting lists had blown out across the state, with 35,020 Victorians now waiting for public housing, up from 34,000 in December the previous year.
“Roughly a third of those people are in regional Victoria, with some waiting for years for a house to become available,” Ms Ryan said.
Ms Ryan said the public housing waiting list reduced by more than 5000 under the previous Liberal National Coalition Government.
