Inaction on Murchison aged care not acceptable
29 January 2020
Euroa MP and The Nationals deputy leader, Steph Ryan has slammed both state and federal governments for failing to assist the Murchison community following the collapse of DP Jones Nursing Home in October last year.
Following another meeting with liquidators yesterday, the community was advised the nursing home will close for good in 14 days’ time and with it, Murchison Neighbourhood House.
Ms Ryan has again written to both levels of government to request their urgent attention to prevent the closure of the nursing home and the flow-on effects this will have for the town’s future.
“I am deeply disappointed by how this process has been handled,” Ms Ryan said.
“Damian Drum has been doing a power of work behind the scenes, but we need the liquidators and the state and federal governments to pull their weight.
“I am gobsmacked that three expressions of interest were received, yet none of the interested parties were even contacted by either the liquidators or the federal department.
“It is now clear that the liquidators have only ever had one goal in mind and that does not extend to working with the community to find another provider to take the facility on.
“Members of the community have worked tirelessly over the past four months to save both the nursing home and Murchison Neighbourhood House, which provides critical services to residents.”
Ms Ryan has further expressed her disappointment in the Andrews Government for failing to provide financial support to save Murchison Neighbourhood House.
Ms Ryan wrote to the Minister for Ageing Luke Donnellan following the collapse of DP Jones last October but four months later, has not received a response.
“Timing is absolutely critical and both levels of government need to step up and ensure that Murchison remains a viable community for many years to come.”
