Labor’s attack on Murchison aged care destructive

17 February 2020

Euroa MP and The Nationals deputy leader Steph Ryan has slammed today’s attack by Labor on the Murchison community’s efforts to save the town’s aged care home.

Ms Ryan said that while Labor MPs at both levels of government had been sitting on their hands following the collapse of Murchison’s aged facilities, the community and local, state and federal representatives had been working together to try to save it.

“Labor’s attempt to use this situation for base politicking is disgraceful,” Ms Ryan said.

Ms Ryan said Member for Nicholls Damian Drum had worked tirelessly to assist the Murchison community following the collapse of DP Jones Nursing Home

“Mr Drum had been advocating passionately for funding to save this facility, as the community had asked him to do.

“Murchison’s aged care home failed because of a unique set of circumstances that resulted from mismanagement.

“This attack by federal Labor on Mr Drum is a criticism of the community and its efforts to save the home from collapse.

“Mr Drum has done a power of work behind the scenes, lobbying the Federal Government to provide immediate financial assistance to protect the future of aged care services in Murchison.

“He has also been working closely with Murchison Community Care who operate the local neighbourhood house, to help minimise the potential flow on impact the closure of DP Jones has on vital services offered there including health services.

“The $400,000 provided by the government was a lifeline to the Murchison community whilst the Federal Government sought to find an alternative provider.

“Neither state nor federal Labor have shown the least bit of interest in lending a hand to the Murchison community following the announcement of DP Jones’ liquidation in October last year.

“Members of the community have worked tirelessly over the past four months, advocating to both sides of politics to save Murchison’s aged care provider and Murchison Neighbourhood House which remains at risk following the collapse of DP Jones.

“Labor’s attack on Mr Drum is particularly galling, given they themselves have shown no interest in aiding the Murchison community,” Ms Ryan said.
