Letter to the Editor - Benalla P-12
01 April 2015
I am pleased to see Benalla Rural City Council has thrown its support behind efforts to obtain funding for the Benalla P-12 College.
Since the election I have been working with the school community to bring the parlous state of the school to the attention of the new Labor Government.
In 2013, the Coalition allocated $5 million to the school and The Nationals fought hard for a commitment of a further $15 million at the last election.
Despite its claim that it would make Victoria the education state, Labor offered no funding commitment to Benalla, or indeed to any other school across the Euroa electorate.
At the beginning of February, I wrote to Education Minister James Merlino asking him to visit the school to see first-hand the conditions in which students are being asked to work.
I am yet to receive a response.
In coming weeks, I will be asking residents to show their support for the school to make sure Mr Merlino is in no doubt as to how important this issue is to the community.
