Letter to the Editor - Floodplain harvesting
27 September 2021
Victorian irrigators have done more than their fair share under the Murray Darling Basin Plan.
And political games in NSW continue to cause further pain.
Floodplain harvesting in the northern Basin continues to cause concern for Victorian irrigators.
Earlier this year, the Shooters and Fishers Party partnered with the Greens to stop efforts to meter and regulate floodplain harvesting.
They claimed it was an illegal practice.
But this week that claim’s been blown out of the water, with a QC telling NSW’s Floodplain Harvesting Inquiry that it’s “a legal activity”
The changes would have benefitted communities downstream in the southern Basin with the implementation of regulations that would licence and meter floodplain harvesting.
By scuttling the regulations, the Shooters and Fishers Party are complicit in allowing floodplain harvesting to continue in NSW, to the disadvantage of Victorian irrigators.
Shooters and Fishers MP Helen Dalton’s claim that if she was elected, she’d “bring the water back” has turned out to be nothing but hot air.
It’s clear where the Shooters and Fishers Party stands.
And it’s not with Victorian irrigators.
