More broken promises from Andrews Government on Shepparton rail

27 May 2022

Shepparton’s promised V/Locity trains won’t be delivered until 2027, under Labor.

Questioning at Parliament’s Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC) today revealed the Andrews Government won’t meet its commitment to deliver nine return services a day to Shepparton when track upgrades are finished late 2023.

This is despite assurances from government officials in November last year that this would occur.

Shadow Minister for Public Transport and Deputy Nationals leader Steph Ryan said the Andrews Government had dropped the ball.

“The news that new trains are years off will come as a real disappointment to Shepparton residents, and those in my own community who are serviced by this line,” Ms Ryan said.

“Regional Victorians are continuing to suffer substandard rail services and are sick of broken promises from the Andrews Government.

“Last year, the Shepparton community was promised nine daily return services in 2023 which has turned out to be a complete furphy.

“Incredibly, additional services were being promised without the government even putting in an order for the trains.

“The Federal Government put the majority of the money on the table for line upgrades and the Victorian Government has failed to hold up their end of the bargain.”

Ms Ryan said the poor state of regional rail under the Andrews Government was on show last week when the entire V/Line network was shut down because of a ‘communications fault’.

“While $28 billion has been sent down the gurgler on cost blowouts for city infrastructure, Shepparton residents are left waiting years for get additional, essential train services,” Ms Ryan said.

“It’s quite simple under the Andrews Government. If you’re not within the metro boundaries, you only get the scraps that fall off Melbourne’s table.

“The disrespect being shown to regional Victorians is why it is absolutely essential there is change of government in November.”
