Premier’s CFA mess gets messier
10 April 2017
Premier Daniel Andrews has refused to rule out a potential expansion of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) to regions currently protected by the CFA.
In Parliament recently the Premier faced questions from The Nationals and Liberals on whether he would guarantee no changes to the existing boundaries of the CFA and MFB.
The questions came after Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan tabled a petition bearing nearly 1500 local signatures in support of the region’s CFA volunteers.
Ms Ryan said she was concerned about reports the Premier was negotiating with the UFU to extend the MFB’s coverage area to include outer metropolitan areas and major regional cities in order have his destructive Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA)
She said The Nationals and Liberals had also promised to give volunteers a say in every enterprise agreement that impacts on the CFA and its operations.
“Any CFA board that disrespects the Volunteer Charter will be sacked,” Ms Ryan said.
“Our local CFA volunteers are modern day heroes, giving their time to protect our safety, yet Daniel Andrews refuses to answer legitimate questions in Parliament about the government’s plans.
“As Premier, Daniel Andrews is supposed to govern for all Victorians but time and time again he fails to stand up for our CFA volunteers.”
Ms Ryan said her petition called for Daniel Andrews to keep his hands off the CFA and had been supported by 2000 people from across the Euroa electorate, with an extra 500 signatures coming in through her website.
“If the Andrews Labor Government had any doubt about the Euroa electorate’s support for our CFA volunteers before today, they shouldn’t anymore,” Ms Ryan said.
“My petition is still available to sign and I encourage people to consider writing a letter to Labor, Emergency Services Minister James Merlino and Premier Daniel Andrews expressing your concern.”
