Roadside slashing on the Hume
07 March 2017
I was pleased to see tractors slashing grass along the Hume Freeway near Baddaginnie last week.
Slashing has also been done further south, near Euroa.
I commend VicRoads for responding to my calls for this work to occur, however growth on roadsides should be controlled on an ongoing basis.
Each year I receive phone calls from people concerned about the fire risk long grass on the roadside poses and each year it seems we must press VicRoads to properly maintain the Hume Freeway.
Undoubtedly this year was made more challenging than normal as a result of the Andrews Government's cuts to the road maintenance budget and good rains.
I know residents whose properties border these sections of the Hume are very relieved to see this work done.
Mitigating the risk of fires is a responsibility we all share and the Victorian Government, through VicRoads, should be no exception.
