Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan has facilitated the meeting between federal Rural Health Minister Fiona Nash and community members Elizabeth Perry and John Barnett, with the assistance of the new Member for Murray Damian Drum.

“Responsibility for funding the co-location of Rushworth’s hospital lies with the Victorian Government, but Minister Nash was happy to meet with the community and hear about the issues,” Ms Ryan said.

“Staff at the hospital provide an excellent level of care but additional works have had to be undertaken to meet accreditation standards. The Andrews Government must make an investment in the hospital’s future if it is to continue servicing the community.

“I will not accept an outcome where the hospital is forced to close and Rushworth residents must drive 40 minutes to the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital in Shepparton or an hour to Bendigo for treatment,” Ms Ryan said.

The community sought the meeting with the Federal Minister after repeated requests for the State Health Minister to visit the hospital were ignored.

“The hospital serves almost 7000 residents in Rushworth and surrounding communities including Stanhope, Corop, Colbinanbbin, Whroo and Moora who contribute significantly to the state’s economic output through farming, forestry and tourism," Ms Ryan said.

“All local residents are asking for from the Victorian Government is a modest investment in their future."

Ms Ryan said she would work with the community and Goulburn Valley Health to support an application for state government funding for the project.
