Ryan reiterates need for government help for Murchison neighbourhood house

Euroa MP and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan has called on the Andrews Government to provide immediate assistance to the Murchison community following the sudden closure of DP Jones Nursing Home.
Speaking in Parliament last week, Ms Ryan urged the government to examine purchasing Murchison Neighbourhood House which is at risk of closure due to liquidation of Murchison Community Care.
“The Murchison community is desperately seeking assistance from all levels of government following the collapse of the town’s community-run nursing home,” Ms Ryan said.
“Elderly residents have lost their homes, while many local residents have lost their jobs.
“Damian Drum as the Federal Member has been working flat out to try to find a solution for the nursing home, but the neighbourhood house is the Victorian Government’s responsibility.
“Last week in Parliament, I called on the Andrews Government to examine purchasing the town’s neighbourhood house, which provides a number of critical services to the local community.
“There is significant concern about the impact the collapse of DP Jones will have on the rest of the community.
“The town’s medical clinic, pharmacy, neighbourhood house and Men’s Shed are all located in buildings owned by Murchison Community Care.
“If they are sold in order to recover money, there is a risk the town will lose its GP service, the neighbourhood house and the pharmacy.”
Ms Ryan said she had received an assurance from the Minister for Ageing Luke Donnellan that the Victorian Government would continue to provide coordination funding for the neighbourhood house.
“The pressing issue now is making sure the neighbourhood house continues to have a building from which to operate,” Ms Ryan said.
“We need the Andrews Government to step in and help purchase the building to ensure the vitally important services which are run from the neighbourhood house can continue.”
