Ryan throws support behind second design option

Local MP and deputy Nationals leader Steph Ryan has thrown her support behind draft designs to realign Benalla’s existing rail track as part of the Australian Rail Track Corporation’s Inland Rail project.
Ms Ryan said with overwhelming community support, the second design option would also provide real opportunity for change and a chance to restore some of Benalla Station’s long-term legacy issues.
“Our local community are incredibly passionate about getting this design right from the get-go, ensuring the preservation of Benalla’s rich rail history,” Ms Ryan said.
“The ARTC has done a good job to take on board many of the concerns raised with them by the local community and the Benalla Working Group.
“The community have been very clear that they do not want a bridge looming over the precinct.
“The proposed second design option is overwhelming preferred by the community.
“It includes realigning the existing rail track and demolishing the current road overpass.
“When the ARTC initially released its plans for the Benalla leg of the Inland Rail project, realigning the track wasn’t even on the cards.
“This is a huge win for the Benalla community. Advocacy and perseverance have meant the designers have gone back to the drawing board to create something that addresses their concerns and is more visually appealing.”
Ms Ryan said with the community consultation period now coming to an end, she is urging the Federal Government to choose the second design option as the most preferred.
“Over the coming weeks, the Federal Government will elect their preferred design option for Benalla,” Ms Ryan said.
“I am urging the Deputy Prime Minister to listen to the voice of the Benalla community and realign the existing track.
“This is our chance to transform Benalla Station into something of which the community can be proud.”
