Ryan to take action for Benalla residents under the pump
12 February 2015
Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan is calling for expressions of interest in a local fuel price action group.
Ms Ryan said she was jointly facilitating the establishment of the group with the Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy in response to strong community concerns regarding the high price of fuel in the region compared to other regional towns and metropolitan areas.
“Even with the recent drop in petrol prices, I continue to hear from residents concerned about the discrepancy in fuel pricing in towns throughout the region and compared to Melbourne,” Ms Ryan said.
“While fuel prices are influenced by many factors, including fluctuations in the Australian dollar, changes in international benchmark prices and pricing decisions by wholesalers and retailers, the ongoing discrepancy between prices in Benalla and other areas is an issue of equity.
“The establishment of a fuel price action group, made up of local residents, will provide an opportunity for these discrepancies to receive greater attention and for any possible local alternatives to be scrutinised.”
Ms Ryan is asking those interested in the group to provide their contact details and an initial discussion will follow.
“Benalla and the surrounding area has been highlighted by constituents as particularly expensive and I am keen to hear from residents from other towns who are interested in joining the action group too,” Ms Ryan said.
“I think people are frustrated by this ongoing issue and by coming together the community can examine possible solutions.
“For example, the Lockington community has successfully established a community-run petrol station which could be a useful starting point and case study for this new group.”
Anyone interested in becoming involved in the fuel price action group is asked to call Steph Ryan’s electorate office on 5762 2100 or email their contact details to [email protected]
