Statement on the NSW Inquiry into Crown Casino
09 February 2021
Daniel Andrews must immediately establish an independent judicial inquiry to examine whether Crown remains suitable to hold Melbourne’s casino licence.
The findings of the Bergin Inquiry have enormous ramifications for Crown’s Melbourne casino operations and should be of concern to every Victorian.
A thorough investigation into Crown’s Melbourne licence must now be undertaken – not the tick and flick approval process undertaken by the regulator.
The Bergin Inquiry has found that Crown is not a suitable person to hold a casino licence in NSW based on findings about the infiltration of organised crime.
It has recommended the establishment of an Independent Casino Commission, with the powers of a standing Royal Commission.
In contrast with NSW, Daniel Andrews has refused to undertake any kind of investigation into Crown and our regulator has become a lap dog instead of a watch dog.
From the start, Daniel Andrews has been reticent to investigate the claims surrounding Crown and its Melbourne operations. The question is why.
It is a matter of public record that Crown has donated significant sums of money to the Labor Party and his former media spinner now works at Crown.
