Urgent support needed for local business
20 March 2020
Euroa MP and Nationals’ deputy leader Steph Ryan has called on the Victorian Government to provide desperately needed small business support in response to COVID-19.
Ms Ryan raised the issue in State Parliament this week using examples of businesses in the Euroa electorate who are already being impacted by economic uncertainty.
Victoria is now the only state in Australia that has not announced support for businesses in the face of the pandemic.
“Action from the Victorian Government, like that undertaken by other states, is now urgent. The clock is ticking,” Ms Ryan said.
“Businesses across our region need support as we work together through the challenges presented by COVID-19.
“Small business is doing it really tough. Many already struggling as a result of the bushfires have now been hit again by the impacts of COVID-19.
“I will advocate at a local, state and federal level for the community and small business support that is needed.
“I encourage impacted local businesses and organisations to contact me so I can establish your priorities and lobby for the necessary assistance.
“I will continue to push Andrews to roll out a support package, as every other state and territory in Australia has already done.”
Ms Ryan said she continued to field inquiries from small business owners incredibly stressed about their future and that of their staff.
“It is unfortunately inevitable that we are going to see local businesses in jeopardy, job losses, those who are temporarily laid off and those who have their hours reduced as a result of this situation,” she said.
“It is incredibly important for the state government to proactively minimise the impact of COVID-19 on Victoria’s economy and support our small businesses at this unprecedented time.
“I encourage people to shop locally to support local businesses and I will keep calling for the Victorian Government to do the same.
“It's time for Andrews to follow the lead of other states and step up with a Victorian small business support package to ensure businesses can survive.”
